In 2022, what's the situation for women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics)?
Manifeste à propos des femmes en STIM offers 50 texts aimed at the general public. It brings together the reflections of a number of authors and groups from the academic, university and private sectors working on women in STEM in French-speaking Canada. The Manifesto is intended to be positive and forceful, even if there is still some way to go to achieve equity and parity. A number of major issues are still topical, such as work-family balance and penalty-free maternity. Issues such as intersectionality, EDI (equity, diversity and inclusion) and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on women in STEM are also explored. Of particular note are the texts proposed at the intersection between STEM and the fields of health, the arts, education and philosophy. Other texts show concern for doubly-minoritized women, such as Aboriginal women and non-heterosexual women in STEM fields. Pioneering women testify to their journey, paved with obstacles but also with pleasures. Seven recommendations are proposed for a society that aims for equity, diversity and inclusion of women in STEM from an intersectional perspective.
