Twelve university professors recount their «teaching journeys»: their philosophy of teaching, the defining moments that have marked their years in the classroom, how they have evolved, their current concerns about teaching, their frustrations, their satisfactions, and their doubts. Intended primarily for faculty members, and more broadly for anyone interested in current issues in university teaching, this book is intended as a «reflective resource» in a context where speaking openly about one’s pedagogical concerns is not always easy or welcome. Academic culture does not always recognize the high emotional toll that teaching takes, nor does it always encourage sharing and reflection on pedagogical issues. At the end of the book, the authors revisit key themes that emerge from the twelve teaching journeys—relationships with students, conceptions of learning, the drivers and barriers to pedagogical development, and how teachers are evaluated, among others—and offer avenues for reflection in light of research in higher education pedagogy.
Anne Mesny is a professor of management at HEC Montréal and has been teaching for more than twenty-five years. She holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Cambridge (UK). She teaches courses in general management, sociology, pedagogy, and epistemology. She is also a specialist in case-based teaching. Her current research interests and publications focus on pedagogy.
David Pastoriza Rivas is an associate professor of international business at HEC Montréal. He holds a Ph.D. in Management from IESE (Spain). Passionate about teaching, he has been teaching for about fifteen years. His recent research focuses on the disadvantages faced by foreign companies in host countries and competitive behavior in the field of sports.
Serge Poisson-de Haro has been Professor of Strategy at HEC Montréal since 2006. He holds a PhD in Management from IESE (Spain). His research and teaching interests focus on the fields of strategy, particularly in the arts and culture, and pedagogy. Passionate about the case method, he has written numerous pedagogical cases on cultural institutions.
