Making decisions is an everyday activity that we perform almost automatically without giving it a second thought. Some decisions, however, call for more in-depth reflection, which can be supported by various analytical tools. However, we too often forget that the primary decision-making tool we should be more familiar with is the human brain. Far from being infallible, the brain can lead individuals to make choices that are not in their best interest without them even realizing it. The better we understand these inherent flaws in the decision-making process, the easier it will be to guard against them and make better decisions.
This fourth edition explores in greater detail the cognitive, affective, and collective mechanisms inherent in the decision-making process, which consists of six stages: defining the problem, gathering information, generating options, assessing risk, making a choice, and learning from the experience. Each of these stages is analyzed in terms of its constituent elements with the aim of highlighting both the complexity and the challenges inherent in the decision-making process. The book also addresses the decision-maker’s context and the constraints imposed by that context, collective decision-making, the role of emotions and intuition in decision-making, as well as ethics. This book does not claim to be theoretically exhaustive, but seeks to inform readers about the most recent advances in the field of decision-making and to provide the practical foundations from which decision-makers will be able to make better decisions.
