Despite the importance of SMEs in the economy, there are few books to guide entrepreneurs who are constantly short of resources. This handbook sets out to answer the question: what path can SMEs take to one day become large companies? To do so, this handbook revisits some of the leading theories of organizational management, but from the perspective of the SME: legitimacy, impression management, rational choice, resource dependence, agency theory and institutional theory. The first part familiarizes the reader with the basic concepts used in the literature on large firms. In addition to characterizing the entrepreneurs who run SMEs, this part bridges the gap between what is usually read in management textbooks and what is presented in this manual. Then, through the primary functions (sales/customer service, production/logistics and marketing), we explain how each of these theories influences the SME on a day-to-day basis and can influence its growth. The final section focuses on the support functions (administration/finance, human resources management and information technology) and the theories presented in this book. Packed with examples from successful SMEs, this book is as much for the student as for the entrepreneur who wants to compete with big business. Basically, it's a guide that will help the former to understand how an SME works, and the latter to target concrete actions to be taken in one or other of his company's functions in order to aspire to growth.
