This book proposes a journey, using the case method, to explore the phenomenon of leadership, the personalities and personal histories of corporate leaders. This collection is a complement to teaching, even if such a journey can be undertaken on one's own.
Its aim is not to propose recipes for transforming a person into a leader, but rather to enable the reader to be more aware of the different facets (some admirable, others more problematic) that leaders present, to be a little less surprised by the behavior of one's own leader (current or future) and, perhaps, to know oneself a little better. Some will find inspiration, others the conviction that it's never too late to develop their own leadership, still others the idea that their personal history and characteristics, whatever they may be, are not always a handicap - quite the contrary.
Finally, by choosing which of the cases are leaders in their own eyes and which are not, readers will also refine their own vision of what leadership is, what they expect of their leaders, and of themselves.
Professor at HEC Montréal since 2006, Cyrille Sardais, Ph.D., teaches and coordinates many of the leadership and management courses. Trained in management at HEC Paris and in history at EHESS, his research focuses on executives, leadership and decision-making. He has studied the archives of Pierre Lefaucheux (Renault CEO 1944-1955), and more recently poker players and orchestra conductors. He headed the Management Education Department from 2012 to 2014, and has since directed the Pierre-Péladeau Chair in Leadership.
