Making decisions is an everyday activity that we do almost automatically without giving it a second thought. Some decisions, however, require more careful consideration, which can be supported by various analytical tools. However, we too often forget that the primary decision-making tool we should be more familiar with is the human brain. Far from being infallible, the brain can lead individuals to make choices that are not in their best interest without them even realizing it. The better we understand these inherent flaws in the decision-making process, the easier it will be to guard against them and make better decisions.
This book aims to explore the cognitive, emotional, and collective mechanisms inherent in the decision-making process, which consists of five stages: defining the problem, gathering information, generating options, making a choice, and learning from the experience. Each of these stages is analyzed in terms of its constituent elements to highlight both the complexity and the challenges inherent in the decision-making process. It also addresses the decision-maker’s context and the constraints that context imposes, collective decision-making, uncertainty and risk, the role of emotions and intuition in decision-making, as well as ethics. The scope of this book is not to be theoretically exhaustive, but rather to provide the practical foundations from which the decision-maker will be able to make better decisions.
