There are moments in the life of an organization when major questions about its future arise. Centraide of Greater Montreal is currently experiencing one of those moments. It is an organization that symbolizes solidarity among community members, and its campaigns serve as a major gathering that brings together nearly 500,000 people. Centraide is currently facing significant challenges. On the one hand, there are long-standing, low-intensity issues—ones that are not very visible but lie at the heart of community action—and which cannot be neglected without jeopardizing the deep sense of harmony that has characterized Montreal’s communities. On the other hand, there is the tendency among businesses to view philanthropy as a crucial, strategic dimension, which leads them to prioritize causes that are visible and appealing to the general public. This book begins by describing the history of Centraide and its major successes to highlight the significant crisis that this tension poses for philanthropic efforts and community solidarity in Montreal.
