About a decade after the clear resurgence of interest—first among practitioners and then among researchers—in the concept of the business model, questions remain about its relevance in relation to existing concepts and tools in strategy. Is it a concept with multiple meanings? A «catch-all» concept? A useful concept? A sustainable concept? These are all questions that, beyond the concept’s popularity, invite us to take both a critical and constructive look at the business model within the field of strategic management. As our work teaching strategy and supporting innovation projects led us to question the relevance of the business model as a concept and tool, it seemed to us that a roundtable discussion was necessary to attempt to answer the questions raised. This roundtable discussion took place on June 8, 2011, during the 20th conference of the International Association for Strategic Management (AIMS) in Nantes. The purpose of this short book is to share with the reader the full transcript of the discussion that took place that day.
