The building envelope is the element that separates the exterior from all climatic conditions, from every specific need, in particular the comfort of occupants inside the building. We've come a long way from the massive stone walls and wood-fired heating of early Quebec buildings as the only way to keep warm in winter. Empirical design and technology have greatly improved the design of walls and roofs. Aesthetics aside, there are fundamental principles to be respected when designing a building envelope that will maintain acceptable conditions inside and ensure the durability of the materials that make up the envelope.
The purpose of this book is to fill a gap in the subject and, above all, to help people learn and understand the principles of building envelope design in Quebec. It's not a scientific statement, it's a work of popularization. Happy learning.
Benoit Lavoie is a technologist who has worked in architectural firms for over twenty years, applying building envelope principles. He then taught these principles at Cégep de Lévis-Lauzon for 15 years.
