The increasing number of political, social, environmental and geopolitical crises is shaking up our world. Yet, without denying the seriousness of the problems, we must recognize that the major human issues remain unchanged; the essential challenges of our existence have always been the same. Admittedly, the answers evolve, adapting to the times and circumstances. But the real questions keep coming back.
Power, violence, justice, the quest for meaning and the need for recognition irreducibly shape our humanity. AI and technology, war and political authoritarianism do not overturn these issues: they displace and reconfigure them, forcing us to invent new responses.
This is the starting point for this essay in the form of interviews between philosopher Laurent Bibard and journalist Thibault Lieurade. The authors propose to examine these constants by calling on the great authors and thinkers of all eras. Their reflections, which cover 13 subjects from Europe to sexuality, transcendence and education, aim to identify the new questions that need to be asked in order to raise them beyond the prevailing short-termism. Without losing sight of the fact that there is no inevitability, and that the future will above all be what we make of it.
Laurent Bibard, philosopher, has been a professor at ESSEC Business School since 1991. He is also a consultant to companies and public institutions on issues of change management, ethics and decision-making in a context of uncertainty. He has published numerous works, including Terrorisme et féminisme and Complexité et organisations: Faire face aux défis de demain (with Edgar Morin). He is a regular speaker in France and abroad, sharing his work on complexity and management philosophy.
