Why publish a practical guide to sexuality education in primary schools? Quite simply because sexuality education is essential to children's development, and it's important to become more comfortable teaching it. And above all, because we all care about the well-being of children and the development of tomorrow's citizens!
This guide is aimed primarily at teachers, but also at anyone with an interest in the subject.
It covers the child's stages of development, the content to be taught, ideas for concrete activities, children's literature, the development of fluency in the person teaching this content, and various approaches to intervention.
You'll also find suggestions for linking sexuality education content to that of the Culture et citoyenneté québécoise program. This reference book covers all primary school levels, including preschool.
This book also highlights the use of children's literature as a lever for learning about sexuality. Indeed, several children's books are proposed, some of which are explored in greater detail in this book to enrich your ideas for activities in a fun way that reaches out to young people.
The aim is to equip you to answer your students' questions while guiding you in your interventions. It will also enable you to develop your knowledge and increase your fluency.
Wishing you, our dear readers, a lot of reading pleasure!
Allyson holds a bachelor's degree in sexology from the Université du Québec à Montréal. A member of her professional order, she is passionate about sex education and the transmission of sexological knowledge. She advocates a caring, transparent and evidence-based approach. For several years now, Allyson has been working in a school service center as a sexuality education consultant. It was through this role that she discovered a real passion for spreading positive sexuality education to young and old alike.
Camille de la Sablonnière graduated from the Université du Québec en Outaouais, Saint-Jérôme campus. She will earn her bachelor's degree in preschool and elementary education in 2019, then go on to teach cycle 2 and finally obtain tenure in grade 6. Her experience in grade 6 has given her an understanding of the importance of sexuality education in primary school for older children, in their current reality (social media, etc.). Camille is a committed, positive teacher who values meaningful learning through her students' enjoyment and commitment. It's through her passion for children's literature that she manages to capture her students' interest by including albums in her lessons.
Laurie Dubuc is earning her bachelor's degree in preschool and elementary education at the Université du Québec en Outaouais Saint-Jérôme campus. Graduating in 2019, she is interested in brain development and its involvement in a child's overall development. As a teacher, she values empathy, kindness and tolerance. She currently teaches in a school that promotes positive education and focuses on connection rather than reaction. She helped write the collective Portraits de femmes et d'hommes remarquables - éléments de culture générale and is the author of the book Développer l'intelligence émotionnelle et relationnelle : des outils pour accompagner les élèves. Her experience as an elementary school teacher has shown her the importance of prevention in sexuality education at the primary school level, particularly with younger children.
Oulma Maalouf holds a doctorate in clinical psychology from the Université de Montréal. Her doctoral dissertation addresses the impact of sexual abuse on the development of long-term physical and mental problems. She completed a one-year internship at the Centre jeunesse de Montréal, working with children and adolescents who have experienced abuse. Since graduating, she has worked as a psychologist in private practice at L'espace, clinique de psychologie, where she focuses on helping young people and their families who are experiencing difficulties that have an impact on their day-to-day functioning and their interpersonal or family relationships. Her clinical experience has enabled her to develop an expertise in working with young people who have experienced difficult life events, and her warm approach enables her to establish a climate of trust with her clients.
