In this book, you'll discover 36 stories of remarkable men and women told by specialists. These characters have bequeathed us a cultural heritage that we still enjoy today. In this sense, they have made the history of mankind. Each of these biographies represents a lesson in life, and reading them will encourage the development of a general culture for all.
Students' level of general knowledge is often considered unsatisfactory when they enter CEGEP. This is also true of the general population. General knowledge helps us to interpret the world and make more informed decisions. The better a person's general knowledge, the more solid his or her judgement is likely to be, since it will be based on a variety of historical sources. What's more, the development of a good general culture leads the individual to decentralize himself. Gradually, they discover the human experience through time. Books are an invaluable resource for developing general knowledge.

My hope is that this beautiful book will find its way into the hands of as many people as possible, in families and schools, as much to awaken a taste for reading in people of all ages as to get them talking to each other. Who is your favorite character, and why? What was the most memorable achievement in this book? What was the most useful human discovery? Finally, I hope that some of these characters will be a source of inspiration for many people, especially in these times when the past is increasingly ignored in our societies. May this book inspire vocations among our youngest readers.
