Teaching mathematics isn't just about imparting knowledge; it's also about keeping quiet so that students can act, reflect and compare their strategies with those of their peers. This book presents a number of conditions that are conducive to the teaching and learning of mathematics, building on students' knowledge to help them acquire the mathematical knowledge they are aiming for. It also presents a teaching sequence based on these conditions, which has been tested by researchers and school professionals. This sequence, made up of six playful situations, focuses on learning multiplication and decimal positional numeration. In this book, the situations that make up the sequence are presented in detail, not only to enable teachers to implement them, but also to understand what underlies them, so that they can be modified to suit their pupils' behaviours. Finally, the characteristics of the situations encourage the linking of different mathematical contents and the creation of meaning, as evidenced by the comment of this student with whom we had the pleasure of working: "Basically, today I didn't learn anything new, but I understood what I already knew".
Virginie Houle is a professor of orthodidactic mathematics in the Department of Specialized Education and Training at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM).
