Foreword by Martin Leclerc
Sport arouses passions and shapes the lives of millions of people all over the world. From sporting feats to simple individual or group activities, sport is at the heart of human activity. Despite this constant presence in our lives, we still ask too few questions about sport behind the scenes. And yet, the events of recent years have shown us just how important it is for sports organizations to adopt good management practices. It was with this aim of shedding light on sports organization that we came up with the idea for this book.
Through the use of case studies, we have sought to explore the sports organization in order to shed light on this background, but also to illustrate the plurality of sports organizations, as well as the issues and challenges experienced by each of them. This format allows us to concretely illustrate specific management situations, which can nonetheless be generalized to other contexts and organizations.
The book includes a wide range of case studies on organizations as diverse as the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and Nascar, to the management of a sport-study program and sport excellence in a developing country.
We hope that readers will find them a source of inspiration for the management and development of the organizations in which they work, whether in sport or elsewhere. We also hope that these 18 case studies will bring organizations to life, and make learners and their teachers realize that good organizational management is fundamental to healthy and sustainable sports practice.
Whether it's through exemplary or harmful practices, these organizations have a lot to teach us, so let's make the most of it!
Jérôme Bilodeau is Director of Canada's Office of Energy Efficiency, an organization fighting climate change. He teaches energy policy at Carleton University, and sits on the steering committee of the UN Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC). A slow but passionate cyclist, Jérôme loves to ply the country's roads on his good old road bike.
Sébastien Arcand is a sociologist, full professor and currently Director of the Management Department and Associate Director of the Pôle sports at HEC Montréal. He is interested in the management of ethnocultural diversity within institutions and organizations, socio-economic inequalities in sports practices, and the socio-professional integration difficulties faced by people from immigrant backgrounds. He has been named one of the 100 most influential academics in government by the British organization Apolitical, Employment and Skills section, for 2021. Passionate about cross-country skiing and soccer, he tries to combine these passions with his professional work, and his motto in sport as elsewhere is «Do things seriously without taking yourself too seriously»!
