This book is intended primarily for Grade 6 teachers, but also for mathematics pedagogical advisors and future primary school teachers. All will find in it problem situations and application situations of the type proposed by the Quebec Ministry of Education for the end-of-primary mathematics tests, which they can use to better prepare grade 6 students for these ministerial tests. The development of this book was a long process that began with the use of a bank of situations constructed by students in initial training as part of a mathematics didactics course taught by Professor Souleymane Barry at UQAC. These numerous and interesting situations, compiled between 2013 and 2018 from successive cohorts of students who had to develop mathematics mini-evals in teams, were selected, then reworked and improved. In this respect, the resulting compendium is a fine example of collaboration between the university and the community, enabling the experiences and productions of both sides to be highlighted, including those of students in initial training. Many thanks to all these cohorts from the Module d'éducation au préscolaire et d'enseignement au primaire and the Unité d'enseignement en adaptation scolaire et sociale at UQAC!
The first part of the book groups together the situational problems and, for each one, the reference document, the student workbook, an answer key (or example of level A reasoning) and an evaluation grid (level A) for the skill of "solving a situational problem". The problem situations are grouped by theme (fractions, decimals, area, time and temperature, statistics, probability, triangles and angles, etc.) and relate to the main mathematical concepts covered in grade 6 during the school year. The second and final part of the book presents application situations, also grouped by theme. Each application situation is accompanied by a student workbook, answers and an evaluation grid (level A) for the competency "to reason using mathematical concepts and processes".
Chloé St-Pierre is originally from Gatineau. She contributed to the writing of this book during her studies at UQAC as a research assistant to Professor Barry. She has been a teacher at the Centre de services scolaires des Draveurs since 2019.
Érika Houle-Minier is a young elementary school teacher. She contributed to the writing of this book while a research assistant to Professor Barry at UQAC.
Maxime Boivin is a pedagogical advisor for primary and secondary mathematics and secondary science and technology at the Centre de services scolaires des Rives-du-Saguenay. He is also a lecturer at UQAC.
Souleymane Barry is a professor of mathematics didactics at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC) where, since 2008, he has been mainly involved in the didactic and practical training of future primary school teachers.
