This guide to mediating learning and problem-solving strategies is aimed at all teaching, education and training staff working with students and adults who need to actualize their intellectual potential. The first part briefly presents the theoretical foundations of cognitive education, clarifies the concepts of learning and problem-solving strategies as used in the book, and describes 12 principles on which to base efficient mediation. The second part outlines a typical cognitive efficiency workshop, with tips for putting it into practice in the classroom or in other intervention contexts. The third part models the content and conduct of 26 workshops on as many learning and problem-solving strategies, including 5 basic workshops of a more affective and organizational nature, with which mediation should generally begin.
François Ruph, PhD, has been involved in the development of the Cognitive Efficiency Program, initiated by Professor Pierre Audy, PhD, at the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT) since its inception in 1989. A graduate in psychology from the Université de Lyon, France, with a Master's degree in education from the Université de Rimouski and a doctorate in psychopedagogy and andragogy from the Université de Montréal, he quickly became interested in the learning strategies of university students, for whom he created a 3-credit course in the form of a cognitive efficiency workshop. As director of the Cognitive Education Research Unit, he and his team led the research and design of cognitive efficiency workshop programs for students and adults at all levels of schooling, in partnership with local organizations, including Montreal's Centre DÉBAT (Développement de l'éducation de base au travail).
