Warm and Meaningful Collaborations
This book addresses distress among care providers, which takes many forms: aggression, acute stress disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, vicarious trauma, harassment, burnout, and compassion fatigue. The causes of this distress are numerous. Some risk factors stem from the pressure exerted by a performance-driven society, changes in the world of work, or the political, social, and economic climate. Other risk factors, meanwhile, arise directly from the workplace or relate to the affected person’s personality and functioning. Beyond these factors, it is clear that inadequate training in how to properly protect oneself psychologically and physically during interventions also increases the risk of experiencing distress at work. On the contrary, being more aware of risk factors and knowing protective measures makes us more likely to protect ourselves. This manual serves as an introduction and an invitation to make our health and safety at work a priority.
«Maintaining one’s integrity is a multifaceted issue, and taking care of oneself—especially when working in social services—can be a challenge. In her book, Marie-Ève offers a variety of very practical ways to achieve this by describing and explaining the integrity-related issues that practitioners encounter in their work. In addition to being highly educational, this book encourages us to take care of ourselves by being kind to ourselves. It’s a guide you can read over and over again, learning something new each time.» Rosanne Pépin, social work technician
«I'll be on the lookout for the second edition of this book! I regularly use the tools it contains. It would be hard to make it any more comprehensive!»Marc-Antoine Létourneau, social work technician
Marie-Ève Gingras has been a professor at Cégep de Sainte-Foy in the Social Work Techniques department for almost fifteen years. She holds bachelor's and master's degrees in social work from Université Laval, as well as a wide range of work experience as a social worker. She has worked in both institutional and community settings, where she has worked with a variety of clienteles: families, young people, women and victims of domestic violence, bereaved parents, people with mental health disorders, people with eating disorders, seniors and people in crisis situations. She has also held a variety of positions over the years, such as access rights manager, outreach worker, volunteer manager, community project manager, internship coordinator, internship supervisor and teacher. Through this experience, she has been made aware of the risks of the profession and the importance of knowing how to protect one's personal integrity as a caregiver. Today, she is particularly interested in the mental health of caregivers, particularly from the angle of the themes addressed in this book.
