Identifying deciduous trees and shrubs in winter is a real challenge. When the most obvious morphological characteristics (leaves, fruits) are no longer as visible as they are during the warmer months, the observer must redouble their efforts to distinguish between species that all appear to look alike. However, it is possible to identify most species fairly easily by using certain alternative criteria. This guide highlights the most relevant characteristics of buds, twigs, and bark, supported by clear and effective visual aids. The approximately 200 photographs accompanying the descriptive entries for nearly 60 deciduous species have been carefully selected to clearly illustrate the sometimes subtle characteristics that are often necessary for identification. This guide is therefore intended to be a user-friendly, concise, and streamlined tool that focuses primarily on visual identification and aims to quickly distinguish the main forest species of southern Quebec. This book is intended for amateur naturalists, biology students, and professionals who need to conduct inventories and characterizations of natural habitats during the winter season.
