Professions addressed to others share something special that makes them both unique and complex. Far from being merely intellectual work, they have a strong human, interactional, emotional and ethical dimension, in which the relationship with the Other is central. With the growing complexity of the professions addressed to Others, and of the conditions in which they are practiced, we may well wonder about the new forms of professionalism called for in day-to-day work, about the difficulties faced by those involved, and about the forms of support offered to them. This book sheds new light on professional development in the human professions, drawing on in-depth reflection and empirical findings. It brings together authors from Quebec and France, and includes 11 contributions corresponding to four distinct realities (teaching, training, health and social services), all of which are characterized by one constant: concern for the Other. Decision-makers, trade unions, professional orders, field workers and training institutions will find in this book avenues likely to lead to quality professional development and improved practices in professions dealing with others, where complexity, indeterminacy, intersubjectivity and ethical issues weigh significantly.
