By playing with building blocks, children learn to build themselves and their understanding of the world. In this book, Jacqueline Thériault and Manon Doucet highlight the richness and relevance of this play material for the overall development of young children.
Based on recent research describing the two facets of play with this material - physical construction activity and symbolic activity - the reader will discover that children go through various stages of development in their play, enabling them to develop a variety of skills and acquire a variety of knowledge. In this volume, the authors recall the role of the teacher in the use of these play materials, provide numerous examples of activities and draw attention to the urgent need to facilitate access to them for "at-risk children".
Abundantly illustrated with pre-school children's productions, this volume is designed to remind those working with young children of the importance of play in general, and building with blocks in particular, in everyday practice.
Their book is also aimed at teachers, specialized teachers and students in pre-school training, both at CEGEP and university.
