This book was designed for students of the "Protection de son intégrité personnelle" course in the Social Work Techniques program offered at Cégep de Ste-Foy. However, it will be of interest to all those working in the community or in health and social services who wish to be made aware of the need to take care of themselves and to act in a way that prevents the risks of their chosen profession.
Deepen your self-knowledge, enrich your personal and professional maturity, learn about the personal protection required by the helping professions, and learn how to intervene safely for yourself and others - that's what this book offers.
Several topics are covered, such as burnout (or adjustment disorder), compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, aggression and post-traumatic stress disorder. They will help you learn to recognize the risk factors, predispositions and clues in yourself and your work environment that could compromise or influence your physical and psychological integrity.
Marie-Ève Gingras has been a professor at Cégep de Sainte-Foy in the Social Work Techniques department for almost fifteen years. She holds bachelor's and master's degrees in social work from Université Laval, as well as a wide range of work experience as a social worker. She has worked in both institutional and community settings, where she has worked with a variety of clienteles: families, young people, women and victims of domestic violence, bereaved parents, people with mental health disorders, people with eating disorders, seniors and people in crisis situations. She has also held a variety of positions over the years, such as access rights manager, outreach worker, volunteer manager, community project manager, internship coordinator, internship supervisor and teacher. Through this experience, she has been made aware of the risks of the profession and the importance of knowing how to protect one's personal integrity as a caregiver. Today, she is particularly interested in the mental health of caregivers, particularly from the angle of the themes addressed in this book.
